SO WHAT?
I'm going to be honest. I spent most of the weekend walking and napping. It was amazing. If you are unfamiliar with this thing called the "out of doors," I suggest you try being out in it. That being said, I don't have much for you yet. BUT, tonight @ the Alamo Ritz
WITH DIRECTOR ALEX COX LIVE IN PERSON. WOW. AWESOME. DO IT. I'M GOING. I WILL SEE YOU THERE. NEED TICKETS? OF COURSE YOU DO
And because that's got me feeling nostalgic for movies I used to think watching would transform me into the coolest guy ever, I present to you two very different trailers for an old favorite movie I've rediscovered
PHANTOM
THE OH CRAP, IT'S THE PHANTOM VERSION
Fact of Fun: the guy that did the music for "Phantom" also did the music for the 1st Muppet movie. Looking forward to this week and actually going out an being a real person again. Soooo done with school. I'll keep you posted as things develop

EARTH FOR THE EARTHLINGS
This post is dedicated to the interplanetary disco of SPACE
(I can't imagine how, but skip to 3:00 if you get bored)
Wonderful, no? Their music and videos have such a simple concept, but play out so well. I even got you an MP3. You know who loves you
Space - Magic Fly
Wow, what a weekend! I'm glad I didn't let the terrible weather stop me. I think you will agree, however, this is very sad:
RIP
Bea Arthur
"After being in the business for such a long time, I've done everything but rodeo and porn." Said by a woman who made a career of turning shit bricks into shimmering ice diamonds of sarcasm.

MAGIC WEATHER
Thanks, rain. Guess I'm NOT starting my pepper garden today. But! I have goodies for you. Firstly, this portion of today's post is dedicated entirely to the majesty of
The internets have been aglow with their ear candy magic for a month or so now, but I can't let that stop me from telling you how much I'm digging this stuff. I could go on hyping them up, but I'll let these tracks speak for themselves. I've got an original for you, and an absolutely tits remix of a classic track by Newcleus (so near and dear to my little black heart)
Phone Tag - Timing
Newcleus - Jam On It (Phone Tag RMX)
Wonderful, no? Perfect music for when the sun returns. Show them love on the myspace (herez)
ART TONIGHT
UAHA and My Kid Could Paint That want you to come check out student artwork, eat cupcakes, and listen to tunes provided by KVRX DJs tonight @ the Art Authority 8-Midnight. Art prices range from $5 to $150, so you can even take some of the magic home with you
Art this SUNDAY
Oh look, an art show. One day only! 7-10pm @ Co-Lab (613 Allen on the East Side). I will steal the words the artists chose to describe it (insert deep breath here): "Drawing from the collections of Warren Aldrich and Lillian Gerson, comes a frantic onslaught of visual information reminiscent of the cluttered energy of a packed flea market stall or an overcrowded garage sale. Both artists work with a strong collage mentality handling every medium with a process of accumulation, from the paintings composed of minuscule dots and dense layering to the assemblages of found objects. Just as each individual piece is essential to the series, so too is the crowded context crucial to the singular, thus leading the viewer to seriously consider the possibility that quantity can truly dictate quality." Sounds cool.
I went there for AWTHUMFETHT a few weeks ago. They have a cool thing going on
And Beauty Bar wants to give you a chance to buy things! Bless 'em
Musical equipment, clothes, and booze? Oh neat. Do have a good weekend and do brave the rain to do things

VEGA love tonight
You've got money, the time, and good sense, right? Then of course you're already planning on seeing VEGA tonight at La Zona Rosa. He's opening for Crystal Castles, so tickets will be gone any minute. I hear tell he'll be back in town on the 24th, too. Count on hearing more about that
LET'S NOT FORGET (TERROR TUESDAY)
"(The Original) Toolbox Murders" in RARE 35mm! Witness power tools used in unsafe ways! As in, for killing people! Screening starts at 10:30, but I'd be sure and show up early for this one. Alot of people ended up missing "NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE" last week, and wow, did they miss out. That film restored my faith in movies, people, watching things on screens in general, my own purpose for existing, John Stamos, and other important stuff I'd begun to question. And for all you people that think Tuesday is the new Friday, this showing is early enough that you can still hit the bars afterwards
Coverage is going to be skimpy this week, seeing as I am going to be horribly busy in my endeavors to graduate on time. To make up for it, I've got a few links for you

Hello Beautiful
I had a bunch of these guys' MP3s sitting unlabeled in my iTunes (PRODUCT PLUG) for like two years and had pretty much abandoned all hope of finding out who the hell it was. Then one magical day, I woke up to my room mates blasting a song I thought sounded awfully familiar, so now (with thanks to my good pals I live with), I bring you BLACK DEVIL DISCO CLUB:
These guys have been around in various manifestations for, well, about as long as anyone. There's been quite a bit of speculation that they're a new band masquerading as a classic band having a revival or are altogether fictitious. I doubt that. If you look at their live footage,
they're either spending alot of money on prosthetics to make themselves look like old French guys, or they are in reality old French guys.
Check out something they released under their older moniker, Black Devil
Black Devil - H Friend
And I've just got to mention that last year's release, "Eight Oh Eight," is pretty choice stuff. Their remixes are consistently grand pieces of music, as well. It seems that besides being madly talented, they've developed a healthey level of perspective (I know, right) and the good sense to take what they want from whatever dance fad is happening at the time *coughdistortioinbitcrushingsidechaincompressioncough* and leave the rest. Enjoy!

OH AND
Almost forgot about that one. New monthly spot at a rooftop club? Well the guys at Learning Secrets always have done well for themselves. I hear tell there will be free Red Stripe from 10-11
If you've missed seeing Ringo Deathstarr live, it's about time you do. How about this Thursday? Why, that sounds wonderful.I know I've been hammering this one into the ground. I know my flawless and charming rhetoric already won you over long ago. I know the gravity of the situation must seem unquestionable, BUT just in case I have failed to convince you to make the pilgrimage to see "Never Too Young To Die" tonight at the Alamo Ritz, I present video artifacts of

For those of you lucky enough to not be completely submerged in mandatory things to do this week
TODAY (UPDATE):
specifically for those not scared of internalized double-time rhythms. If you've never been to BARCELONA, it's definitely worth checking out. They have a unique vibe that's hard to find on 6th street
and let's not forget this. Due to be a legendary show.
MONDAY
STUFF
+
The Texas Union and ECC present Robert Bresson's "Pickpocket" @ the Texas Union Theater 7:30 PM. It's FREE and it's way more accessible than the French New Wave your friend that's into that stuff tried to turn you on to. It's entertaining, but never untrue to it's subjects. AKA good. I like

NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIEMarvel as John Stamos and the professional Canadian/pretty lady known only as Vanity conspire to overthrow a post-apocalyptic, hermaphrodite overlord named Velvet Von Ragner, who is incidentally played by Gene Simmons of KISS. No, I'm not making this up. I have never personally seen this movie, but I can safely say that even having someone tell me its premise was one of the most riveting experiences of my life.

WEDNESDAY
"The Last Unicorn," with writer Peter S. Beagle live, in person @ Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek (13729 Research Blvd) 7 PM, $9/ human. For those of you unfamiliar with talking to women, this movie is pretty great. The voice work alone is worth the drive: Mia Farrow, Alan Arkin, Jeff Bridges, Angela Lansbury, and Christopher Lee as the scary bad guy, imagine that. The most 70s Hollywood feeling ever allowed into fantasy animation. Ok, aside from Ralph Bakshi, but he's something else entirely
+ MUSIC THAT IS NEW, LIVE, AND FREE
Featuring: International Waters, Caddywhompus, and Hatchet Wound (debut performance by Erin of Finally Punk and the indomitable Nigel of Bearclaw). It's all happening at Club 1808 (1808 E. 12th, how clever) from 9-12. Check it out. By the way, anyone know what's happened to Bearclaw?
Wednesday's also Passover. Eat some extra flat bread for this gentile
More to come as things develop. I had a great weekend. Hope everyone survived

WELL FINE
If you're blue and you don't know where to go to:
always a viable alternative on nights like tonight, when going out seems, well, a little dicey. And noo, I'm not suggesting you put on black face and run around your house in coat and tails. I'm just saying that tonight's an excellent time to be creative. Try goin to the out of the way places you've always meant to
A friend of mine used to break dance to that song. Kids in Mexico loved it. Long story. Anyway, stay safe tonight, y'all

Ain't that poster just a chunk of feel good? BLACK PANDA, GET TO DA CHOPPA!!, SCOURGE OF THE MILLIPEDE playing for someone's birthday. The last birthday party I heard about at BEERLAND, someone got naked. No promises, though.
I'd like to take a moment to remind anyone going downtown this weekend that Texas Relay is in town, so be prepared to deal with the extra crowds. Additionally, some downtown businesses will be closing early or not opening at all. Hooray for being scared of black people, Austin. A bland Statesman article, behind the link. Anyway, in past years, this mainly affects the main drag of 6th street itself, but you might have to go on an adventure to find parking, so's be prepared

Rainbow Blowing Bubbles
For this blog's inaugural post, I want to drop something imminent, timely, and germane to the perilous condition of our world today.
PERFECT SOLUTION
Heavily choreographed Germano-Russo-ABBA inspired power rangers that had a popular resurgence a half decade ago. It's like disco-pop created by fabric scientists and history majors. If your brain starts to hurt, skip to time stamp 2:05.
And their leader is some sort of czar-type guy doing interpretive dance. Or something. Making dramatic faces? There's definitely some twirling in there. Like I said, doing something. And what trans-continentally popular pop group named Dschinghis Khan could avoid an ode to their namesake:
Not this one, apparently. Neither has this, um, group been immune to pop cannibalism.
WITNESS
and of course there is a dubious J-pop cover of "Dschinigis Khan," complete with yurt, which is actually pretty cool looking.
YURT ENVY
The last time I saw Japanese people hanging out in yurts was 2007's criminally underrated "Mongol."
In talking to people about this movie, it seems that the most complaints fall along the lines of, "there's not enough action," "ew, a family drama," "what the red devil are those noises they make with their throats," "there's no conquering. didn't this guy do alot of that?," or all of the above. My answer usually falls along the lines of "then go watch 'Shooter,'" "yeah, a family drama - with swords," "throat singing is awesome," "oh, well it's supposed to be the first part of a trilogy, so 'Mongol' was mainly back story," or all of the above.
As of yet, production hasn't started on the sequels. Key word: yet. The general consensus is that they're still being made and that the director and lead actors are still on board. Hooray for that. Hooray for sequels I actually want to see. And hopefully those movies will come together before Dschinghis Khan (inevitably?) reunites to put out a new single called "Mansa Musa," or something like that
