SXSW HIT LIST FOR WEDNESDAY 3/17

Another great lineup at Cheer Up Charlie's. Associated details and links to myspaces (hurrr). Alot of these bands are Brooklyn favs of mine, but I'm especially excited for Austin, TX to meet Light Asylum and Coasting. I'm sure they'll be the best of friends. This show is also preceded by the Yo Garage party, so show up early to be blown away by some truly badass Mexican bands

Agh, showcases this good make it hard to know where to be. Any tips on how I can clone myself to be at this and the above show at the same time will earn you a bar of chocolate. What else do you need to know? There's free Red Stripe from 7-9 and you need to RSVP, so get on that

If you have really excellent eyesight, then you already know that this 4 day party is quite the deal. It's essentially a Hypemachine playlist performed live, without the Otis Redding or Prince that randomly pops up every now and then, sadly. The day to day lineup is still shifting, so check (here) for updates. That's also where you RSVP, so do that. Destined to be a memorable party

Holy 17 year old me, Joan of Arc is playing a show! Exciting! (Details!)

All day/night show at Baby Blue (1522 E 12th), featuring Brazos, Sunset, Cowabunga Babes, Bad Credit No Credit, and everyone else listed (here). Free beer until 7 PM and BYOB or cheap beer after that. The event is called Spuds by Spuds Mackenzie, hence the picture of Spuds Mackenzie, dog, opera enthusiast, and truly a star of his generation. RIP

And by the way, here's what you're doing after hours: High Society is hooking you up with a free booze dance party at Music Gym (815 E 6th). Sammy Bananas, Disco Villains, Cousin Cole, Willy Joy, Oh Snap!! (live set? guess so), Electric Method, Hoodie Allen, Hot Britches!, Blake Brandon, eLstar, and Sebastian Nebula will be on hand into the wee hours to guarantee you are able to exercise your god given right to dance yourself into a stupor. Forever and ever amen

Awesome bands for you to see. And face painting? Cool. Lineup presented in all caps (hHeErReE)

Some of Austin's best homegrown DJs are playing host to visiting comrades in the spirit of dancing while the sun is still above the horizon, something too often restricted to listening to Ata Kak in your apartment by yourself. That is probably just me. Location details are (here)

Free day show with pretty cool bands and BBQ at one of my favorite Austin bars. I review bars for a living, so sometimes I know what I'm talking about in that regard. Sometimes. Also includes the other wonders you see described in above poster

The good people at Monofonous Press are being all selfless and throwing a benefit for the SIMS foundation. Indie rock is tryin to save the world again, bless its little heart. A good day show option. Details (here)

LONGSHOT
In a perfect world, this party would not require you to wake up before noon to go stand in line in order to guarantee you get in, but that seems to be how its shaping up. Free beer noon to 2. If you're going to MtyMx like you should be, you'd be guaranteed to see a good chunk of these bands. And you'd be in Mexico. Just sayin. Anyway, details are (here)

NOT QUITE SUCH A LONGSHOT
The Austinist presents White Denim, Besnard Lakes, Washed Out, Small Black, Royal Bangs, Toro y Moi, Phantogram, Warpaint, Julianna Barwick, Yukon Blonde, Body Language, First Aid Kit, Anni Rossi, MyNameisJohnMichael, All Get Out, and Dan Black for $0 and no RSVP. Show starts bright and early at 11 AM. Oh day shows, you so silly. Full Austinist style writeup (here). Once again, MtyMx has a bunch of these bands

ALL FOR MTYMX

After alot of thinking, soul searching, and a pilgrimage to a far away site that is most holy to my people (K! Pizzacone in Midtown, but more on that another time), I have decided to forego the cynicism that seems to be fashionable when it comes to writing about MtyMx. In fact, I'm going to pull in the other direction and give you a list of reason MtyMx is going to be awesome. But first, the poster:

Isn't she lovely? Aaand reasons are go
  1. Look at that lineup. Actually, click on the poster and then look at that lineup. See anything you like? I bet you do. IT IS AMAZING. You'll notice that no two bands start at the same time, meaning you can actually see everyone play. A music festival where you can actually see every band play. Wow, where does that happen? Definitely not at SXSW. Details, bios, and write ups of some the bands are available (here)
  2. You'll notice quite a few of those bands are from Mexico. This is a great chance to get acquainted with the awesome music people are making in scenes I'm pretty confident you aren't familiar with (read: Mexico). None of it is to be dismissed. Click around on a few of their Myspaces and you'll see what I mean.
  3. Uh, Grant Hart from Hüsker Dü is playing?? What?? Oh yeah, Dan Deacon, Thee Oh Sees, Liars, Salem, No Age, Washed Out, Fucked Up, and Andrew WK are there, too. Can you tell I'm excited about the music?
  4. The thing is about as grassroots as it gets. No titanic corporate sponsorship or any of that. Curated by Todd P and Yo Garage, this festival is %100 about music. Think of it as a cultural course correction away from everything that's made SXSW and CMJ cliches unto themselves.
  5. It is in Monterrey, a beautiful, stable, and vibrant city ringed by mountains. It is absolutely gorgeous. When I was younger, every other year I'd skip out on SXSW and spend a week down there. And that wasn't even when there was a huge, groundbreaking music and arts festival happening. Why? Even in its normal day to day existence, Monterrey is arguably the most important cultural center in Northern Mexico. I'd say that there's nothing that compares northwards, until you get to around, oh say, Austin, TX. Sorry Brownsville and San Antonio, but I dare you to prove me wrong.
  6. It's happening at a former drive in movie theater on the side of a mountain, guys! They throw alot of raves and stuff there, so you might even find some rained on fun pills stuck wedged into the asphalt.
  7. Food supplied by taco trucks! And they will be selling actual Mexican food, not Tex Mex or whatever this stuff is that Yankees call Mexican food.
  8. You can camp on site or stay at a hotel.
  9. It is bound to be an adventure. You shouldn't miss it.
And now that I've thoroughly convinced you that this event is totally worth sacrificing three days of your life in the name of having an amazing time and possibly getting a tan, (here is where you buy a $30, 3-day pass), (here is how you can get there), and (here are some places you can stay). See you down there!

GO DARKNESS, GO

Todd & DJ Harrison’s Tuesday Nite Disco is getting started off on the right foot, with SALEM and GATEKEEPER? Both? Playing together?? If you are a fan of dark electronic music, you know how good this is going to be. If you aren't, then is going to be an overdue education for you. Get your tickets (here). Looking forward to what this weekly set at Glasslands will come up with next. I'm sure they'll let us all know. NOTE: this music is designed for being heard in certain contexts (loud rooms full of people who are down), so take advantage.

And oh yeah, there's an after party with an absolutely dizzying list of DJs: Gatekeeper (DJ set), Blackmoth, Kingdom, So Bones, Wish 4 ∞ Orchards, Teengirl Fantasy, DJ Mark Brown, DJ DJ Screw's Ghost, and even more. Wow, Tuesday, good job
