SXSW HIT LIST FOR WEDNESDAY 3/17

Another great lineup at Cheer Up Charlie's. Associated details and links to myspaces (hurrr). Alot of these bands are Brooklyn favs of mine, but I'm especially excited for Austin, TX to meet Light Asylum and Coasting. I'm sure they'll be the best of friends. This show is also preceded by the Yo Garage party, so show up early to be blown away by some truly badass Mexican bands

Agh, showcases this good make it hard to know where to be. Any tips on how I can clone myself to be at this and the above show at the same time will earn you a bar of chocolate. What else do you need to know? There's free Red Stripe from 7-9 and you need to RSVP, so get on that

If you have really excellent eyesight, then you already know that this 4 day party is quite the deal. It's essentially a Hypemachine playlist performed live, without the Otis Redding or Prince that randomly pops up every now and then, sadly. The day to day lineup is still shifting, so check (here) for updates. That's also where you RSVP, so do that. Destined to be a memorable party

Holy 17 year old me, Joan of Arc is playing a show! Exciting! (Details!)

All day/night show at Baby Blue (1522 E 12th), featuring Brazos, Sunset, Cowabunga Babes, Bad Credit No Credit, and everyone else listed (here). Free beer until 7 PM and BYOB or cheap beer after that. The event is called Spuds by Spuds Mackenzie, hence the picture of Spuds Mackenzie, dog, opera enthusiast, and truly a star of his generation. RIP

And by the way, here's what you're doing after hours: High Society is hooking you up with a free booze dance party at Music Gym (815 E 6th). Sammy Bananas, Disco Villains, Cousin Cole, Willy Joy, Oh Snap!! (live set? guess so), Electric Method, Hoodie Allen, Hot Britches!, Blake Brandon, eLstar, and Sebastian Nebula will be on hand into the wee hours to guarantee you are able to exercise your god given right to dance yourself into a stupor. Forever and ever amen

Awesome bands for you to see. And face painting? Cool. Lineup presented in all caps (hHeErReE)

Some of Austin's best homegrown DJs are playing host to visiting comrades in the spirit of dancing while the sun is still above the horizon, something too often restricted to listening to Ata Kak in your apartment by yourself. That is probably just me. Location details are (here)

Free day show with pretty cool bands and BBQ at one of my favorite Austin bars. I review bars for a living, so sometimes I know what I'm talking about in that regard. Sometimes. Also includes the other wonders you see described in above poster

The good people at Monofonous Press are being all selfless and throwing a benefit for the SIMS foundation. Indie rock is tryin to save the world again, bless its little heart. A good day show option. Details (here)

LONGSHOT
In a perfect world, this party would not require you to wake up before noon to go stand in line in order to guarantee you get in, but that seems to be how its shaping up. Free beer noon to 2. If you're going to MtyMx like you should be, you'd be guaranteed to see a good chunk of these bands. And you'd be in Mexico. Just sayin. Anyway, details are (here)

NOT QUITE SUCH A LONGSHOT
The Austinist presents White Denim, Besnard Lakes, Washed Out, Small Black, Royal Bangs, Toro y Moi, Phantogram, Warpaint, Julianna Barwick, Yukon Blonde, Body Language, First Aid Kit, Anni Rossi, MyNameisJohnMichael, All Get Out, and Dan Black for $0 and no RSVP. Show starts bright and early at 11 AM. Oh day shows, you so silly. Full Austinist style writeup (here). Once again, MtyMx has a bunch of these bands

POST ON FIRE

Thanks for getting it wrong, Austin Chronicle. Why make up quotes? Why try to be the Sage of All Things and Expert of All Business, when you are a weekly paper and inherently stuck in that world? Why go about things in such a strange, even dishonest way? It all seems unnecessary. At the very least adisclaimer along the lines of "BASED ON A TRUE STORY" would be appropriate for this cover story. All complains aside, and I do have quite a few, congrats on making an compelling piece of fiction

RUMBLINGS

TODAY
Oly crap! Afrika Bambaataa: speaking. Prince Klassen, DJ Scuba Gooding, and Startynx: DJing. Good luck to Open Labs and Red Bull trying to hold my attention with their new thingamajig, as I will be too excited/already own a laptop.

A live reading by a really interesting author, brought to you by Monofonous Press.

And this will be fun, as per usual + RAM-Z.

WEDNESDAY
Join us at the Lamar pedestrian bridge this Wednesday from 10-? for a DRUM MACHINE CIRCLE. Bring your Akai, Oberheim, Linn, Dr. Groove, E-mu, Alesis, Roland, Korg, Quasimidi, Elektron, Yamaha, Wurlitzer, Dave Smith creation, JoMox, or hell, your old Casiotone with the bongo sound (I'm bringing mine) along with a speaker or amp and let the magic of the Elders of Zion free the rhythm of your soul's inner mind. Er something. Even if you are not a proud drum machine owner, opportunities to gawk and take photos will abound.

This week's special guest is VICIOUS. Very nice!

RSVP is closed. For venue info (ooh, they do weddings) go here. Vast amount of details here.

All the local talent you can handle without breaking something inside yourself.

THURS
Most DJ battles end up being something like this:

I get the feeling that this one will be different. For instance, there will be no green wigs. Seriously, this should be grrreat.

FRI
Posters like this make me glad I am not colorblind. Sorry for the broad, quick, and dirty update, but there is more of that good stuff to come. There is sew (see that pun I made har har) much going on for Fashion Week. It's a little bit dizzying for one of the uninitiated, like myself, but I will do my best to trawl the waters for free things. Happy birthday, Steve!

MUCH MUCH TO DO

and that means much much to talk about. Let's start with some things happening today that slipped my mind
The fine folks at parts and labor are celebrating their reopening with beer, vodka, and clothes/various artifacts created by local designers/artists. I was never aware that they were closed, but it's a good thing they're back. I'm a big fan of the New Bohemia and Parts & Labor family, so go out and give them some love from me while I'm at work
And all the way from the exotic landscape of Oklahoma City, WILDLIFE brings you Kids at the Bar! As always, it's happening at Barcelona. WILDLIFE is everywhere these day, no? Good for them
No idea what this is really, but it's $5 for some live music and all the really tasty coffee you can afford. And Anglophilia abounds at Elysium:
I wonder if anyone will have the nerve to play Elastica. Prepare to hear music from Manchester

FRIDAY COMES LIKE A LION
My good pals in the Eastern Sea are doing a live recording! That's cool! I remember back in the day when Matt was playing by himself, with just a guitar, a tape recorder, and a dream - er talent. You get the idea. It's always goo to see an old friend doing well. If you're interested, facebook event page is here
And back with a new color scheme, it's the weekly TGIF party. Looks like a familiar slew of talented gentlemen will be providing the musics

SATURDAY
The White White Lights are opening for UME at La Zona Rosa. Highly recommended! More people I know making music. I'm hugely biased, but whatever. The WWLs are only getting better. I hear tell there's a $5 cover, but you can dodge it if you RSVP. Lots of house parties on Saturday, but for the sake of preserving friendships, I can't say more. Text me if you know me

More to come! Happy birthday to everyone! Congratulations!

FFRRURRSSDDAYY

Quick update before I head off to work. So tired, so spacey, so glad to be writing something that isn't 12 pages pages long and lacks a clearly stated thesis in the first paragraph. Mercy

What's with this rain on the weekends business? Let's hope the sky cuts us a break. If any sky gods owe you a favor, now's the time to call it in

BUT TUNITE
Richard.Gear's weekly spot at Barcelona. That's the bar on 6th, not the city. Maybe someday, but not today.
Zee perennial noise makers known as the Hype Headz present MOM&DAD at Elysium tonight. Haven't heard too much M+D, but what I did sounded really interesting, un-average, and not at all what I was expecting
No, that's not just any guy in a pink tank top, it's so-and-so of the Pillow Queens! He and whats-his-face and that-guy-yeah-him are playing with Dikes of Holland, Over the Hill, and Alright Tonight @ Red 7. Monofonus Press will be giving out door prizes to the first 50 people to walk in the door, so get there early!

FRIDAY SEEMS SO FAR AWAY (but it's just tomorrow, after all)
DAN "MOTHERFUCKIN" DEACON @ EMO'S. This guy is kinda popular, so ya know, show up early if you don't have tickets already. His live setup seems pretty crazy this time around. From the pics I've seen, there's ALOT of live instrumentation. THAT'S CITIN' TO ME

SATURDAY

Hey, it's world wide Record Store Day and BACKSPIN RECORDS is having real live DJs, a record sale, and what's this? FREE BEER? Can it be? Sweet. In case you've never been to this little prize of a wax shop, it's located on 4631 Airport, just down the street from some shitty video store, whose name escapes me right now. Go buy records before I get them all

More to come. I might even throw some MP3s at you, who knows. Stay sleep deprived, Austin

Happy Eastard

Lots of stuff going on tonight!

WITNESS
What a fun line up, amiright? Wish I wasn't working, but whattaya gonna do about that
That's all happening at Creekside. Always a viable option.
Domy Books @ 8 PM. A DVD release by Monofonus Press. And the flier speaks for itself. It's art, man.
And the good ol' Art Authority is hosting a slew of local DJs, all of whom you probably know and/or love on a personal level, for a $4 cover.

ON EASTER-EVE (SATURDAY)
$12 at the Parish. w/ photos by our good friends at the PEEN SCENE. The mayhem continues after hours at
for which you must RSVP!
culnsweet1[at]yahoo.com

There's also a naked underwear people party at Beauty Bar, just in case you want to feel the full weight of your sins on Easter morn'

Ddddo it!
