A JOURNEY ROUND MY SKULL

One of my lovely girlfriend's friends turned me on to this blog about a month ago and I've been hooked ever since

WITNESS
A Journey Round My Skull offers its readers a plethora of work illustrators, foreign, rare, and often forgotten. The level of careful analysis and "book fetishism" the author displays is truly amazing and serves to add another layer of intrigue to what is undeniably some of the best eye candy around. Be warned, this blog is truly addictive and the archive is extensive

NICO VEGA VS BOOZE FOR FREE

BOOM! SHRIEK! BANG! Sorry, this Dillinger-esque press photo put violence on my mind. Tonight at Submerged, Nico Vega, DJ Thibault and DJ Markus with a K will be spinning and clicking their hearts out. Meanwhile, you can enjoy an open bar (as long as it lasts) from the good folks at 42 Below Vodka and Riazul Premium Tequila. I wonder if it's possible to get a booze sponsorship like that for your daily life. That'd be nice, but I digress. Doors at 8pm

I have to get back to writing this horrible paper that's consuming my life. Have a good week!

MOVIE REVIEWS

Before the 2nd wave of summer movie releases hits, I thought I'd give you folks a few brief movie reviews. They are mostly pictures

WOLVERINE
This movie made me feel pretty much like that. Such pain. Such a piece of crap. It's nice they chose to include all these fan favorite mutants that got left out of the other X-men films, but why does everyone have "Matrix" type powers? These characters are supposed to be mutants, each with a unique, strategic ability. That should preclude somewhere around %99 of them doing the flippy flippy bang bang stuff that was cool like 10 years ago. That particular brand of stylized violence is not only untrue to the spirit of the comic, it's just a lazy way to make an action film. And way to try to turn one of the most famous anti-heroes in comics into the story's main moralizing force. What a poor poor decision in the name of kid friendliness. Ol' Hugh is great at playing a nice guy, but put in context, it smells wrong and serves to make the title character a lame duck through much of the film. Most of my other complaints revolve around key plot points, so for brevity and decency's sake, I'm going to remain silent. Let me just say this though: Liev Schreiber runs like a gazelle. Alot. At the drop of a hat. Every chance he gets. At times, it almost majestic. HOWEVER

STAR TREK
That's the feeling the new Star Trek movie gave me: warm, glowing, and covered head to toe in highly stylized poly-cotton blend. Ultra satisfying, with truly amazing action sequences, the film managed to stay true to the characters I grew up with, while making them available to the viewer in an entirely new way. That being said, from the first 5 minutes, you can tell it's not your daddy's Star Trek, but hell, it's not your creepy crumb-faced neighbor's either. Trust me, that's a good thing. The film probably didn't need to be 2 hours long, but part of me is glad it was. J. J. Abrams can restart my franchise anytime - vaguely sexual undertone intended

Happy Mother's Day! One. Week. Of. School. Left.

Political Party

Ha! Get it? Ha, it's a party and it's, yeah ok. VOTE THIS SATURDAY and then wait out the election results with a few hundred of your closest friends here:
If you don't know where your precinct is, this is a good resource. Also, a smart urban core development plan doesn't mean just building more hulking, empty condos nobody wants to buy. Lee Leffingwell knows this. He also runs alot. And raps

Vote smart, but most importantly, vote. Apathy is counterproductive. Not voting doesn't send a message. For all they know/care, you're just being lazy, not making a protest

SHEENA, ARE YOU READY?

As if you need another place to go tonight. Duh, of course you do. This totally slipped my mind yesterday. I had the flier downloaded and everything. Now it has an honored position at the very top of the post. Good things come to those who wait, I guess. Is excellent musical happenings for you to make enjoyment

I still haven't found anything new for Friday (see Thursday's post), so if you've got anything, shoot it my way. Saturday is whole different story though. First of all, find out who your real friends are as the UT School of Design and UT RTF's senior classes face off in THE artsy fartsy showdown of the year
Projections begin at sunset. They're integrating the existing architecture of the plaza into the process. I've seen things like this before, and it's generally a cool concept that's coming into vogue right now. It'll be interesting to see this technique applied to a familiar context. I can't imagine this will disappoint. Runs til midnight, too
And the opening reception for design show is happening the Creative Research Laboratory from 6-9. You can view some of the projects online (here). If you have a larger flier of this, please hand it over

This is definitely a highlight of the KVRX social calendar. This year, they're giving you a 1 USD price break if you come as a couple. Always looking out for us in times of need, those kids. Undersea costumes and formal wear combinations encouraged

$2 lonestars! That's a steal for a weekend party at Creekside. About 80 million DJs, too. That is not an official number

I bet you'd thought Id forgotten this, but no, I was just saving it. This promises to be an excellent show. I caught Glass Candy last year and wow, they were great. Every complaint I had about the band was thrown out the window by their live show. You take that, add the boys at Learning Secrets, and throw in some USDA Grade A Fancy photography by our friends at the PEEN SCENE, and you have a real winner here

If you can afford it, do it. One of the best live acts in rap/hip-hop/whatever you want to call what these magical people do. They won an Oscar. Enough said.

This is shaping up to be an epic weekend before finals kick back in. On a personal note, today is my last day ever of real live college classes. Has it sunk in yet? Not even a little. A happy birthday to Llano, as well!

HEY, A BOOK

Before I forget, now through next Sunday (5/17), Monofonous Press are giving you the chance to get a copy of "Days Uv Bloat" for whatever you want to pay for it. Whether you've got 50 cents or five bucks, Monofonous don't care. That's right, a real physical book you can hold in your hands, smell, read, or hell, even burn if you want to. Don't do that last one though. It's rude.

From the short bit I've read, this book is about a plague type thing that gets way more out of hand than our own home grown pandemic has. For instance, it actually kills alot of people. If that sounds like some nice, light post-finals reading, then you should check it out. Copies are available at Domy Books, which is located on 913 E. Cesar Chavez. I've walked by that place a thousand times, so it's nice to have an excuse to finally poke my head in the door

GRANDE AULD TAIMS

If, unlike me, you're not too busy to lead a normal life right now, you should head over to Submerged (333 E 2nd St, right next to where the Purevolume's SXSW "house" was) and catch DJ Booty Gator tonight. Get your drinkin on for cheap with $2 Tecate and $3 shots/wells!

Big props to Kyle for playing a bar that has a color changing waterfall. There's no flier, so I will just post the first Google Image Search result for "booty gator":
That worked out much better than it could have. I feel we all got off easy. Celebrate by going to Submerged tonight

Earlier in the evening, Darrin Martin is presenting a series of solo and collaborative short films. From what I've been able to figure, they are of the experimental bent. Here's a screen capture:
Intriguing. The event is hosted by Austin Studios (1901 E. 51st Street) and the screening begins at 7 in the PM. For more info, (visit)

Ooh, like the poster. It is national purple poster week, apparently. Keep reading, you'll see what I mean

THURSDAY
In case you're not up to speed on your completely unidentifiable DJs, it's Boston's own HOT PINK DELOREAN! Sweet! Witness the magic as they pair up with local noise meister King Louie this Thursday and Beauty Bar. Should be a rockin' good time. And oh yeah, it's FREE

What? Only one Wild!Life! party that night? Just one? Really? Those boys must be slipping. I kid I kid. As always, Rich.Gear and Joshua Distance and their really cool special guests will be bringing the heat to Barcelona this Thursday night. This week they have GRRRL PARTS and FREDster. Kind of a weird combo, but that can turn out really well sometimes. Like jalapeno limeade. No kidding, try it sometime

FRIED-DAY
Bird's Barbershop is celebrating the opening of their new S. Congress location with a 3D explosion, featuring performances by Neiliyo and Astronautilus. They're taking the theme seriously, with a 3D photo booth (?) by Annie Ray and 3D video art projections all over the store. Free drinks will be on hand to help ease any 3D glasses related headaches. Check it out from 9-12! And I want to say 3D a few more times: 3D 3D 3D, k I'm good

And the Hype Headz want you to come celebrate the end of classes with real live bands and real live DJs and real tasty booze. That's all happening at the Art Authority, so you can be sure all the people under 21 you know will be there dancing like only those kids can

More to come, as spare time slowly begins to creep back into my life
