TODAY IS TODAY

And what could possibly go wrong on a day like today? No, wait. No, still nothin. Hm, thinkin. Nope, a total blank. Anyway, here you go.

A great chance for both live music and dance floor action. Features Video installations curated by Domy Books and viewings of various other arts n such. + Neilyo + Annie Ray + ok, really you should go.

That is, unless you're going to Emo's to see Chairlift perform with their super special added member, composer John Maus. That seems like an interesting combo. Partake in the video evidence provided to see what I mean. Not exactly iPod commercial material. Cool though. And yes, my phaser is permanently set to dork.

And from all accounts, this show is pretty darn great. + Prince Klassen. RSVP is closed already, but I'm sure you can pay to get in.

SATDRODAY

This is Saturday's post. This post belongs to Saturday. Hands off, Thursday.

My A-grade pre-party pick. Big Medium Gallery (5305 Bolm Rd #12) hosts an opening reception for Here We Are, art by Christa Palazzolo and Brian Halloran. If you want a preview, the artists' sites are here and here. 8-11.

An opening at the MASS Gallery (916 Springdale Road) from 7-11, with large-scale sculpture from Dave Bryant and Nathan Green.

Domy Books is hosting a book signing for Handmade Nation, which is a movie you should watch (see Sunday). Anyway, this is from 7-9 and there is free Live Oak.

Fairly self-explanatory. I do like Auto Body and I do like this poster. Tumblr has turned me into some sort of psych art freak the last few week.

+ SHOW. + Black Panda is headlining at the Scoot Inn tonight. They don't believe in posters, but they are a great band nonetheless.

SUNDAY
See above. The Alamo South Lamar is hosting screenings at 1:30pm and 4:10pm w/ a craft bazaar til round about 6. There's an after screening party at Austin Handmade right after that. So many ways to be crafty.

Heart Beats: benefit for a good cause at Mohawk, featuring loads of local acts, who are doubtlessly easier to see than this flier. And and and Black Panda is playing ANOTHER show. This time with the The Apeshits, Monkey Town, Extravaganza, and The Cassingles. All at the sovereign nation of Beerland.

BRIGID

Welcome to Saturday. Saturday, say "hello."

Party AND Bullshit!? DJ Blake Brandon, you just blew my mind. Come dance to ear candy from some of the best, nicest, and best dressed DJs around; on a bridge. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of a bridge show, just know they are awesome. This one will be especially good. Happy birthday, Blake!

ZIN BIN's good pals at the Eastern Sea institute for good music bring said good music to a fancy BBQ joint. Eat a piece of cow for me, guys.

The Pump Project (702 Shady Ln) is hosting
Cantanker's Issue 8 : Anxiety, Exhibition + Catalog Release tonight from 7-10. An anxiety themed release/art party seems almost too appropriate. A+ DO THIS.

All good things... but have no fear, Prepmode will be back with a brand new Saturday weekly in exactly 7 days. Hopefully you can wait that long. If you can't, start a Tumblr. Believe me, it will consume all your free time/make you not notice entire days going by.

The Fifth Gallery presents a vinyl record/DJ themed exhibit. I have not seen any digital captures of the art itself, but if you're looking for something low key to do earlier, this is probably a safe bet for beer and crackers. Enjoy!

And in its continuing drive to become my favorite place ever, Cheer Up Charlies (E 6th and Waller) is hosting
"'Dad Rock' tonight kids from Brooklyn spin classic rock. Film: rosanne, married with children and alf. PBR and coconuts!!" New classic combos await the finding.

JEOPARDIZE YR SANITY

Hit the ground running with a photo exhibition by some of Austin's best and nicest photographers. In addition to all the pretty pictures, you get DJ musics by Hobo D and DJ Boozwa and band musics by King Dong. Mix in stand up laughings from Albert Im, Bryan Gutmann, and Doug Mellard, and you have good way to start your night. For sure. It's at the Art Authority, which means that the free things that usually accompany an art show will not be free, but it runs slightly later than the average art show, ie til midnight.

A show featuring music by ZinBin's good pals at the Eastern Sea, 3-D visuals, and oh yeah, Fulton Read. I don't talk up the Eastern Sea enough, but the stuff they've put together is really top notch. Talented folks.

A good time for a good cause. Cipher Austin will be accepting donations of blank CDRs, pens, and notebooks, so bring an armload.

This week's guest is So Sweet Record's in house guru, Eli Smith. A+

And DJ BOOTYGATOR and co are taking over Hush Lounge tonight. Cheap drinks, plus, if you get tired of the amazing combos of new and old wonderfulness that BOOTYGATOR throws around like it's no big deal, you can go downstairs and be edified by radio hip hop. It's a full cultural experience.

If, like myself, you're working late tonight, you've still got a golden opportunity to get your dance party/free drinking on. In addition to local heroes Dubbel Dutch and Teenage Wolf, Italian masterminds Blatta and Inesha are there to light up Music Gym 'til 4 in the AM. Tour mix (here). They play another set earlier at Beauty Bar, if you want the full effect. Fun fun fun

THIS REALLY DOES NOT FEEL LIKE A TUESDAY

Am I alone in feeling this way?
Fun fun fun from a lineup that is sure to overload whatever organ in your body is responsible for processing indielectro. Hard to beat the $5 cover.

Unless of course you're talking free. This week, "friends" means Teenage Wolf and French Roast, so be sure and get your world purpled up. Happy birthday, James!

This $1 Terror Tuesday, Vulcan Video presents Kingdom of the Spiders. If you are unfamiliar with how spiders work, well there's going to be alot of biting and shrieking. Evolution, too. And William Shatner. You heard me. The only thing standing between spiders and world domination is the unique cadences and plucky individualist charm of Bill Shatner. Sleep soundly, humanity.

AND I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND DO WEDNESDAY IN A SQUIGGLE PATTERN

DAYS GO FLY

So much done. So. Much. To. Do. Fortunately, that also goes for this weekend. It's been tough wading through everything, but I've gotten together a list that ought to keep you drunker, fatter, and happier than a [begin anecdote here] in a [continue anecdote here] wearing a [complete anecdote here] on St. George's birthday.

FRIDAY

Free in-store show at Backspin Records with beer that is also free. DJs PowerTripp, who is 12 years old, and NickNack will be providing the soundtrack to your record shopping and shameless booze hounding experience. Here is where I make a snide remark about a 12 year old DJ and the state of our culture, but I am not, because he is 12 and that is actually very cool. 6:30-9:30, because record dudes need their beauty rest.

Austin Handmade (2009 South First Street) requests your presence for an artist reception for Beverly Satch Mangham. Featuring musical stylings by ZINBIN's pal Hot Britches and free Dripping Springs Vodka drinks. Delicious. 7-9, so put your dancin shoes on early. Photo via Austin Handmade.

Mexic-Arte Museum is showcasing the artwork of 14 "Young Latino Artists" this evening until 9. Cool. This is going on through the weekend.

ZINBIN's good pals over at the Peen Scene want you to not be afraid of girls, specifically girls that DJ. If the awesome special guest weren't enough, it looks like, unless I'm mistaken, the entire Sounds Fit crew will be playing! With those guys being as busy as they are, that really is something we don't see happen often enough anymore.

Now that you have seen the flier for this after party, you officially know as much as I do. What you might not know is that Skeet Skeet is primo. The playing field, as far as this event goes: leveled.

SATURDAY Saw this truck pulling out into traffic this morning. It scared me half to death, but I've forgiven it, because it is the herald of the Austin Ice Cream festival! At Waterloo Park! And it ends just in time for you to go to these art shows: There is a presentation of collaborations by past and present UT Art students at the Creative Research Lab and another group presentation, entitled Polymict, at Okay Mountain. Good times to be had. Art it up, y'all. Also, a very interesting portrait exhibit at BiRDHOUSE. Details elude me. And later

Quintron and Miss Pussycat return to Austin with their amazing live show. No really, these are always alot of fun. Quintron always has a slew of fascinating new gadgets and an odd sort of charisma that is sure to leave an impression. Do this! More to come.

DISCO STALLION

What a title that is. I don't know hinds from heads about fashion week, so I'm going to belatedly defer to this lovely blog: amberdemure. I've just noticed that Austin Is Burning has done the same thing. AWTHUM and Peen Scene have yet to give in. By the way, these blogs are great. Now that I'm done shamelessly plugging things, have I got ze post for you. Art abounds, but TONIGHT!

Yay!
Yay!
WEE! + der fabulous haus pahties

AND ON TO SATURDAY
+
+
MEN-R-G DJs (MVSCLZ, DYLZ-PILLZ, GIGGOMACHINE) will be spinning "the finest in cosmic/italo/electro/house/balearic/rave/german trance/laser
crunk/screw-pop/slam/mosh/dutch filter disco/french bathhouse
garage from the 70s, 80s, 90s & beyond" at their very own party at Rusty Spurs. Yes, Rusty Spurs. Don't act so aghast. If you ever went to Black and Tan, you were basically going there anyway. There was undeniably a good bit of crossover going on. The point is good music, so chill yourself out. Plus, as you might have guessed, there will be a space/2012/future themed costume contest.

+ ART
From 12-3PM, Okay Mountain is hosting a show by Daniel Fabian. Supposedly there is a byo-bbq going on, which is always nice. Artist statement:
These works represent a recurring theme of my thwarted escape to a utopian tropical destination. I frequently attempt to expose the incongruities of reality through a subtle form of humor. Humor is a cognitive mechanism that evolved to relieve stress caused by unexpected outcomes. Its source is a primordial bone located in the elbow.
MASS Gallery is celebrating their staff show with an all day opening. Cool.

SUNDAY
SWEDE!

ZOLO-ESQUE

TODAY TONIGHT TODAY
I can vouch for Auto Erotique live. This is, how you say, a big deal. No word on what the RSVP will actually do for you, but DO show up early, because this bar is on the small side. That can translate to "intimate" shows and/or mild heat stroke cases, depending on how you play it.

No idea, but Richard Henry will surely be spinning gold.

And then there's this across the street. I bet you thought that was all that's making me sad to be working late tonight, but lo, there is so much more.

WITNESS
From 5-10 there's a clothing, record, and anything you want to bring swap at 2405 A East 9th St. Also featuring a free mojito table from 8-10, art things to do, and the sounds of DJ Hot Britches, Hershey Wilson, Courtesy, Cowabunga Babez, and Wild America!

Rancho Relaxo's final farewell happening features music by Spiked Punch, Literature, WYLDPRTY, Cooper Jefferies aka Noggin, You and Me, and Metal Bunnies (pictured, via TUMMYTOAST). We will miss the Ranch! It supposedly wraps up around midnight. There's also a performance art event at the Blue Cube (505 E 50TH ST) that features the art of Jesus Benavente, Scott Eastwood, Jill Pangallo, Chris Reed, and James Willard Pierce. That is from 9-2 and has the standard art event consumables that make up 90% of a proper Summer diet.

SATURDAY (PRIMO)
If you are unacquainted with the idiosyncratic, often bedazzled, and eclectic majesty that is Everything In Heaven Is TV, now is your chance to hold it close to the bosom of your brain and let it become your friend. This event also doubles as a Zom Zoms reunion show, making it a perfect chance to impress your friends by casually dropping the term Zolo-esque. Other live musics provided by the ever lovely and inventive No Mas Bodas, the amazing DIANE, and the smooth sounds of SURVIVE. DJ MVSCLZ and DJ Booty Gator, whose old weekly set at Submerged you may remember, will be spinning between sets and afterwards. Secret guests and surprises abound. Oh whatever could they be? The $8 cover charge gets you all that AND a copy of the show's first season. I sound like I'm overly excited because I am.

Happy Birthday to Clara! + after party, hooray!

SUNDAY MISSILE TEST
now glue it good

This reminds me I need to buy new socks.
