SXSW HIT LIST FOR SATURDAY 3/13

And so begins ZINENBLOGEN's suggestions for SXSW-esque activities. I am calling them HIT LISTs, because they have to be called something, it is fairly self explanatory, and suggestions is one of my least favorite words ever. Suggestions. Say it. It's real bad. Also, I will take any opportunity to put something in all caps. That's Internet yelling? Well you should never be scared to yell at the Internet. It may cry, but trust me, any strong relationship is worth a few tears. That went places I didn't expect.

I've also devised a section called LONGSHOTS for these posts. They are mostly events that A. are excessively hard to get into B. cost alot of money C. lack cultural significance (JUST KIDDING) or D. are otherwise dubious, but still sound like they could be pretty cool. I will present facts and you can make up your own mind. I'm excited, so let's get into it.

YADRUTAS: SEE HOW THE NATIVES LIVE

The entity dedicated to mining Facebook for snicker worthy material known as Lamebook is having a belated launch party at Shangri-La. It costs $2 and gets you free beer and BBQ 'til there ain't no more. There's also an Infamous Austin photo booth, a bunch of Austin
type bands, and most importantly a dance floor run by High Society DJs and pals. Unclear as to what RSVPing gets you, but do you can do that and see the full lineup (here). From 6 PM and goes until 3 AM (what's up, clock change), so sounds like a good place to start and maybe end your night. Come see how the locals like to party.

AMODA (Austin Museum of Digital Art) is having their digital showcase at Club DeVille. In addition to the infamous laptop battle, there will also be live or sort of live musical performances, plenty of interactive pieces, and projection art galore. $8 to fill your life with loud noises and shiny lights isn't too bad. Doors at 9 and any other details you'd ever want to know are (here). Go team Deejay Yayay and Dubbel Dutch!

ENTER: LONGSHOTS

The RVIP Lounge is making a stop at 10pm The Scoot Inn (1308 4th St, Austin) to take about 20 lucky people onboard for a mobile karaoke party. As of now, over 1,500 people have RSVP'd to their their SXSW week invites on Facebook, so who knows how that's going to work out. Conservatively: riots. People go to great lengths for karaoke.

Gawker and io9 are having a party with Stormtroopers, grown men swordfighting (a little LARPING, perhaps?), an MC I am not familiar with, and undetermined free booze. If you are going, you have to RSVP on Facebook. Pity the door persons for this event. Fun poster though. Wish Blogspot would let me put it on here.

MY BRAIN

Thursday things to do. There is a social ride tonight. If you're like me and your bike is perpetually breaking down, you work until later, or you are just too dang lazy, you DO still have some good options.

Hot Britches, DJ Blake Brandon, and oj_did_it bring their power/fury/good music to the Iron Gate on 6th and Waller. Lily white, have no fear: this former "scary" bar is under new management and brimming with shiny disco balls and pool tables. I hear the patio is really cool, but I haven't seen it myself. Did I mention it's right across the street from Cheer Up Charlie's and just down the street from Shangri La? And it's free? Now I have. Nice dudes, good music, and a chance to explore a new environs are all excellent reasons you should do this!

The HUGE monthly spot goes out in style. I caught Prince William at the Broken Teeth party last week and he is amazing. Fantastic. Good things. No doubt you know Deejay YaYYaY, Dubbel Dutch, and French Toast by now, but there's not any harm in getting reacquainted, is there?

BRIGID

Welcome to Saturday. Saturday, say "hello."

Party AND Bullshit!? DJ Blake Brandon, you just blew my mind. Come dance to ear candy from some of the best, nicest, and best dressed DJs around; on a bridge. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of a bridge show, just know they are awesome. This one will be especially good. Happy birthday, Blake!

ZIN BIN's good pals at the Eastern Sea institute for good music bring said good music to a fancy BBQ joint. Eat a piece of cow for me, guys.

The Pump Project (702 Shady Ln) is hosting
Cantanker's Issue 8 : Anxiety, Exhibition + Catalog Release tonight from 7-10. An anxiety themed release/art party seems almost too appropriate. A+ DO THIS.

All good things... but have no fear, Prepmode will be back with a brand new Saturday weekly in exactly 7 days. Hopefully you can wait that long. If you can't, start a Tumblr. Believe me, it will consume all your free time/make you not notice entire days going by.

The Fifth Gallery presents a vinyl record/DJ themed exhibit. I have not seen any digital captures of the art itself, but if you're looking for something low key to do earlier, this is probably a safe bet for beer and crackers. Enjoy!

And in its continuing drive to become my favorite place ever, Cheer Up Charlies (E 6th and Waller) is hosting
"'Dad Rock' tonight kids from Brooklyn spin classic rock. Film: rosanne, married with children and alf. PBR and coconuts!!" New classic combos await the finding.

MIGHTY FINE

Zinenblogen is going to be on a brief hiatus from activity coverage, while I get things together. Don't cry, there will be youtube videos and other things of the sort. That being said, I have contradicted myself by preparing a brief itinerary for your pleasurement.

WEDNESDAY
Soon to become a bi-monthly event, so get your fix! This week features Hot Britches, DJ Ohno, and $1 drinks for those who show up early.

THURSDAY
A lil' flier for a very cool show. The boys from SURVIVE will be bringing their own brand of Electro, Synth Pop, Prog, Kraut, Hardstyle, J-Pop, ItaloDisco, Screw Gaze, and Night Genre to HUSH (above VICE). Please remember this show is on a Thursday. Deal.

RUMBLINGS

TODAY
Oly crap! Afrika Bambaataa: speaking. Prince Klassen, DJ Scuba Gooding, and Startynx: DJing. Good luck to Open Labs and Red Bull trying to hold my attention with their new thingamajig, as I will be too excited/already own a laptop.

A live reading by a really interesting author, brought to you by Monofonous Press.

And this will be fun, as per usual + RAM-Z.

WEDNESDAY
Join us at the Lamar pedestrian bridge this Wednesday from 10-? for a DRUM MACHINE CIRCLE. Bring your Akai, Oberheim, Linn, Dr. Groove, E-mu, Alesis, Roland, Korg, Quasimidi, Elektron, Yamaha, Wurlitzer, Dave Smith creation, JoMox, or hell, your old Casiotone with the bongo sound (I'm bringing mine) along with a speaker or amp and let the magic of the Elders of Zion free the rhythm of your soul's inner mind. Er something. Even if you are not a proud drum machine owner, opportunities to gawk and take photos will abound.

This week's special guest is VICIOUS. Very nice!

RSVP is closed. For venue info (ooh, they do weddings) go here. Vast amount of details here.

All the local talent you can handle without breaking something inside yourself.

THURS
Most DJ battles end up being something like this:

I get the feeling that this one will be different. For instance, there will be no green wigs. Seriously, this should be grrreat.
+

FRI
Posters like this make me glad I am not colorblind. Sorry for the broad, quick, and dirty update, but there is more of that good stuff to come. There is sew (see that pun I made har har) much going on for Fashion Week. It's a little bit dizzying for one of the uninitiated, like myself, but I will do my best to trawl the waters for free things. Happy birthday, Steve!

RED DRESS MANIA

I'm not playing this week, but come catch DJ Blake Brandon and the ever eclectic sounds of Mubali. Come hang out, dance, and do what you gotta do. You know it's 18+ with $2 drinks, but I just told you again

Ye auld weekly spot does not disappoint

And even though I'm not as enthused about Patrick Wolf - if that is your real name, sir - as I once was, I'm posting the flyer for these reasons:
  1. People that enjoy his music immensely have not heard about this show
  2. It's still possible to get in
  3. This flyer is really pretty
There you go. Also, "Lady in Red" is playing at everyone's favorite Austin Java Co. sponsored weekly screening, Weird Wednesday. I hate, but I do love so much. Happy July, everybody!

WEEK IN PRE-VIEW

My airport card is no longer on the fritz. Welcome back, internets! At first glance, this week may seem a bit slow, but you know that just ain't true. Here are some ideas

TONIGHT
Don't think I need help with the whole sweating thing right now, but I appreciate the thought. Also, rock n' roll karaoke at Beerland! Get your rock on

TUESDAY
Terror Tuesday proudly presents the only movie that Stephen King was ever allowed to direct. Ever. Come watch Emilio Estevez take on hordes of inexplicably evil machines lead (?) by an 18-wheeler with a goblin face. It's 100% Michael Bay free evil machine action for Summer '09. Not convinced?

WITNESS

WEDNESDAY
This week's guest DJ is Mubali, so you know there's gonna be more dubstep than you can shake your ass at. 18+ and $2 drinks, as per always

THURSDAY
Black Panda is headlining at Emo's! That's very cool and easily some of the best punk music to be had in our fair city

And if you're heading down to 1st Thursday, be sure and check this out

FRIDAY

Um, Designer Drugs and Transistor Tramps are playing at Headhunters. Poster: forthcoming. Venue choice: confusing. This show: real?

SATURDAY

Celebrate your country by consuming cylindrical chunks of protein. Wow, let me try that again. Come celebrate your right to assemble by eating some veggie dogs with a few hundred of your closest friends! If veggie dogs aren't your thing, there's free NadaMoo. Soundtrack provided by Hollywood Gossip and the Black. Yay for eating contests, yay for community, and yay for le US of A.

GAWEDDO

Come one come all and see DJ Blake Brandon and Jason of Neon black do their thing. I will not likely be playing tonight. I am exhausted. I am working. I will try to be there. Go anyway and hopefully I'll be back at Stereo Gallery soon, a'right? And a happy birthday to Owened!

PLANARAMA

I'm going to be hanging out in Brooklyn for the next few weeks! During that time, this blog will be a bit different than what you've come to expect. The there will be more: random anecdotes, documentation of yankee-isms, some photos, and maybe some more diva profiles, if it rains alot. There will be fewer: suggestions about shows and general things to do. That being said, my link list has many excellent resources for the finding of things to do in Austin. Some of them even manage to promote bands they don't know personally without somehow being vaguely insulting. Someday, I too will master that art. It's on my to-do list right below cutting Nike swooshes into my beard

If you are aware of anything i should see or do in the NYC area, or perhaps even someone I should do some work for, please let me know. I am going into this a bit more blindly than I would like, but from what I hear, the East Coast is something like this:
I feel that expectation is reasonable. Should be fun. Happy birthday (in advance) to Owened, Abigail, Andy Man, and Brion! And do not not not forget to go to DJ Blake Brandon's weekly set tomorrow
It should make an excellent post/pre Golden Filter stop, too. Please water my pepper plants and be kind to each other while I am gone. Much love,

STEREO GALLERY

Passion Pit is sold out, y'all. Head next door to catch the illustrious DJ Blake Brandon and SIMIAN GIBBONS (that's me)

WITNESS
An 18+ show with $2 drink specials is hard to beat any night of the week. This is Stereo Gallery's opening week, so come out, say hi, drink some cheaper than cheap booze, and dance for free! Its not about DJ crews and production companies. It's about having a good time in the only all ages venue in Austin with a genuinely scary sound system. DO IT

WITCHES IN THE WOODS

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW, one of the most entertaining live acts I've seen in awhile, is playing at the Mohawk tonight! Video projections, a live drummer, and vocoding galore: how can you go wrong? Last time I caught their show, even my friends that protest this band's recorded music with all their cold black hearts immensely enjoyed their live set. Music starts around 8. Silver Pines are playing the late show at 11, too. Yet another good night for the ol' Mohawk

And look! It's one of the 3 (?) Troma movies that doesn't send me into a blind rage! Tonight at 10:30! Terror Tuesday! $1. Out of exclamation points

In other news, DJ Blake Brandon has a new weekly spot at Club Mixx. It happens every day of the week that starts with W. Poster and more details forthcoming. This week, he has a super special secret guest you'll never believe. Ok, it's me. Do it.

BENDZDAY

Back in the swing of things again here at ZB (ZinBlo, ZinBin, ZNBN?) and do I have a treat for you

Tonight at Club Mixx, Shooknite and DJ Blake Brandon are bringing the sounds guaranteed to make you rip up your best pair of dancing shoes. It's the stuff that's meant for dancing; the stuff you've gotta see/hear/feel on a serious sound system to appreciate. If you've listened to the latest mix (link) from Shook, you know what I'm talking about. These guys are definitely two of the most fun DJs to see live in Austin. Hands down. Butts up. No contest. What a combo. As always, Club Mixx is 18+ and features some of the cheapest drinks anywhere on 6th. DO THIS LOVE THIS

And for those who prefer loafers to dancing shoes, the Mohawk wants you to rock out - softly, so softly - to some yacht rock covers. What's that you say? Watching some of your favorite local indie bands cover smooth 70s tunes isn't gonna sell you? You want to get in on the smoothness for yourself? Well you're in luck, swab. This is indieroke, so that means you get to belt out all your favorite yacht rock hits for yourself. So there. $3 cover charge. Suitable seagoing attire is encouraged. Austinist.com, wow. This may all seem hypey, but whatever, I'm excited

AND OH MAN, THE Wii JUST WENT THERE

and no, I don't know where "there" actually is in this case. Maybe to the Japan that only exists inside the head of a 13 year old at an anime convention. Maybe there

KAMEHAMEHA

Quick update, because I have a hot date

TONIGHT
Hey kids! It's Details with special guest DJ Blake Brandon. Your favorite all ages weekly party just got turned up to 11 and a half here! If that weren't enough, they're throwing some $2 drink specials at you. Dance and show Blake and Miguel some love

And DJ Bootygator/creepsneakerz's weekly set at submerged is blasting off with $2 Tecate, the Textecker's beverage of choice, and $3 wellssses

And yet another excellent weekly set. Perks include roof and dirt cheap girly drinks. Absolutely wonderful

For those of you in the mood for live music, there's - oh shit! PONYTAIL! They've really blown up this last year with a live show that bewilders, stuns, and always leaves a minty fresh tingle. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Austin's own Pataphysics kick off their tour of the West Coast with a show tonight at Creekside. As we all know, the West Coast can be a brutal, harsh, and terrifying place, so catch the full glory of their live show before they return as humbled shadows of their former selves

And COFFY is playing tonight at $1 (wtf?) Weird Wednesday, sponsored by Austin Java Co. Do all of these things. "That's not possible," you say? Really? Don't argue, just do what I tell you. Everything is going to be wonderful

FUTURE ANIMAL COSTUME DANCE PARTY

WITNESS
It's all happening at Robinson House this Friday! DJ Blake Brandon, SIMIAN GIBBONS, and special guest DJ CHINK CHONG CHINA (of Leopard/Dog and formerly Hey La La) will be banging out the future animal sounds of Austin til the wee hours of the morning. Are you ready? Be ready. Are you excited? You should be excited. I have seen the costumes people are making, and let me just say, wow. Let's make this futuriffic. That's right, I said it

ALL FOR SHITAR

It is too humid to feel human. Oh spring, why do you taunt me with sunshine only to soak me with mist all day. Well, don't let that bum you out. I mean, the ACL line up is coming out soon and, oh wait -WHY? There are maybe, ok 8ish bands on there I don't actively dislike for some petty reason. Looks like I will have to keep begging ACL to let me justify the price of admission. I got some items of interest for ya, though. Might help dull the pain. Free air conditioning with ever purchase!

TONIGHT

VULCAN VIDEO presents the seminal horror comedy, "Blood Diner" in supa rare 35mm format! It's got all the tell tale signs of a fine film: sleazy policemen, cannibalism, unlicensed surgery, Egyptian goddesses that need to be appeased, and the list goes on. Every time you've found yourself laughing at a scary movie, you've really been wishing that, somewhere in the twisted tubes of your black heart, that it was this one. Missed this one a few years ago and ended up watching a VHS copy that broke about 3/4 through. I am correcting that mistake tonight. Screening starts at 10:15. Show up early!

And for those of you who like your escapism to involve less gore/blood and more dancing
Details and DJ Blake Brandon are bringing the music to Back Alley Social tonight. Be sure to check it out! And then there's always the new standard for Tuesday nights.
And it looks like Kary Kadaver is up this week. Wild! Life! does like to bring in those awesome out of towners

WEDNESDAY

Moth! Fight! are playing as part of the "late night" aspect of the Fuse Box Festival. I've been remiss in covering Fuse Box events, but there's such a wide variety of things going on, not all of which are so clearly associated with the festival, which itself is an extremely broad interdisciplinary showcase. It's ongoing until May 2, so I'm going to try to catch events when I can. For tomorrow, you need to know that the show is at the Art Authority for $5, doors at 7:30.
I honestly know next to nothing about this. I'm pretty sure it's their first Creekside show. Digging the unicorn horse thing though. I think triangular mountains are a new flier standard. Look out, robot heads and naked ladies

On to THURSDAY
It's a monthly Learning Secrets party LANAI, and this time they're bringing cheap Red Stripes and $3/Sex on the Beach. That's an easy way to get your daily dose of fruit juice, sugar, and booze in one easy dose
If you're down for venturing a few blocks south to Copa, Grant C Dull, Whats Up Buenos Aires, Peligrosa allstars with Zizek, and Richard Henry will be doing their thing. I've heard really good stuff about these guys. They're really blowing up in Argentine, which is cool. I generally trust Argentina. More info about Whats up Buenos Aires and what it's all about (here)
